Fourth Quarter Comeback Vaults Football To Win At New Hampshire
10/30/2021 | Football
Redshirt junior running back Aaron Dykes (Knoxville, Tenn.) hauled in two passing touchdowns in the fourth quarter, leading the Spiders to their first Colonial Athletic Association win of the year. Dykes finished with three receptions for 88 yards and two scores while adding 34 yards on nine carries. He has now scored nine touchdowns this season, four rushing, four receiving and one kickoff return.
Graduate quarterback Joe Mancuso (Blairsville, Ga.) tallied four total touchdowns as he was 19-of-26 for 291 yards and three scores through the air. Mancuso added a team-high 44 yards on the ground on 10 carries, including a rushing touchdown and a two-point conversion on the ground. Redshirt freshman wide receiver Jasiah Williams (Petersburg, Va.) again led the team in receptions, adding eight for 67 yards.
Defensively, the Spiders limited New Hampshire to only 243 yards of total offense – 141 passing and 102 rushing. Richmond tallied a season-high 13.0 tackles for loss and 6.0 sacks in the victory. The Spiders' 13.0 tackles for loss are the most in a single game since posting 14.0 against Rhode Island November 13, 2010. The 6.0 sacks are the most in a game since tallying 7.0 against UAlbany in 2019.
Redshirt junior defensive tackle Aidan Murray (Ogdensburg, N.J.) was one of five Spiders with a sack, leading the way with a career-high 2.0 sacks while also adding a fumble recovery. Redshirt senior defensive tackle Kobie Turner (Clifton, Va.) added eight tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack and two quarterback hurries as once again the Spiders' defensive line controlled the game.
Redshirt senior linebacker Tyler Dressler (Covington, Va.) posted a game-high 15 tackles, including a pair of loss, while redshirt sophomore Tristan Wheeler added 11 tackles, including two for loss and a sack. Redshirt freshman cornerback Aamir Hall (Baltimore, Md.) led the back end with seven tackles, two for loss and three pass breakups.
The Spiders opened up to a 10-0 lead early in the second quarter as Mancuso scored on a three-yard run and Jake Larson (Baltimore, Md.) tacked on a 32-yard field goal. New Hampshire (3-5, 2-3 CAA) answered back with a touchdown before the Spiders extended the lead to 17-7. Mancuso connected with graduate wide receiver Leroy Henley (Pompano Beach, Fla.) on a 30-yard scoring strike.
The Wildcats scored the next two touchdowns, taking a 21-17 lead into the fourth quarter. The Spiders started their comeback as Larson connected on a 29-yard field goal making it a 21-20 contest. The Spider defense forced a quick 3-and-out and the Spiders needed only two plays taking the lead back for good. Mancuso connected with Henley on an 8-yard gain before hitting Dykes on a 58-yard scoring strike. Mancuso converted the two-point conversion on the ground, taking a 28-21 lead.
Redshirt freshman punter Andrew Lopez (New Orleans, La.) pinned the Wildcats deep in their own territory, dropping a punt that was down on the one-yard line. The defense forced a 3-and-out, setting the Spiders up with good field position. Mancuso and Dykes hooked up on a third down pass, going in from 28-yards out for the two-touchdown lead.
Fittingly, the Spider defense closed out the victory by stopping New Hampshire on its final drive. The Wildcats drove into the Spider territory but defensive lineman Marlem Louis (Venice, Fla.) stripped UNH quarterback of the ball and Murray pounced on it sealing the victory.
The Spiders head home for two-straight games, beginning next Saturday on Homecoming hosting Towson at 2 p.m. at Robins Stadium.
