PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The University of Richmond soccer team earned its first road win of the season Sunday afternoon as the Spiders shut out Atlantic 10 foe La Salle by score of 2-0. Goalkeeper Taylor Montague posted her third clean sheet of the year while Jessie Prillaman and Molly Wierman each netted a goal en route to the win. Richmond improves to 5-6-1 (3-2-0 A-10) while La Salle drops to 3-6-2 (1-2-1 A-10).
"This is a huge win for our team! LaSalle puts you under so much pressure with their direct style of play, and I thought our girls did a fantastic job of dealing with it," said head coach Marty Beall. "Winning on the road has been something we've struggled with this year which makes these three points mean so much to us. I'm a very proud coach!"
Prillaman broke through first for the Spiders in the 31st minute when Richmond knocked down a La Salle clearance attempt, and Prillaman launched a long strike from outside the top of the 18-yard box and beat the La Salle keeper at the top right of the goal. She now has six goals on the year, which ties her for the A-10 lead.
Wierman added the dagger in the closing minutes with another long strike. Montague connected with Wierman off the goal kick, and Wierman took the ball all the way in to beat the La Salle keeper high in the middle once again from outside the top of the 18-yard box in the 88th minute.
The Spiders were outshot 12-9, but six of Richmond's shots reached target compared to La Salle's five. Montague turned away all five shots, four of them in the first half alone, to post Richmond's fifth shutout as a team so far this season.
Richmond returns home next Sunday to host Rhode Island at President's Field Oct. 10 at 1 p.m.
