Woods Breaks Women’s Track & Field Long Jump Program Record

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The University of Richmond junior Kayla Woods (Wilmington, Del.) broke the women's track and field program record in the long jump Saturday, as the Spiders picked up seven top-five finishes on the final day of the Kenneth Giles Norfolk State Invitational at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.
Woods jumped a program-record 5.97 meters to win the long jump. Julee Wilson set the previous record distance of 5.93m in 2003. In her 2021 indoor debut, junior Grace Mittl (Bethlehem, Pa.) finished second in the long jump with a distance of 5.67 meters while sophomore Morgan Crocker (Richmond, Va.) took fourth (5.50m).
The 4x400 meter relay team of sophomore Maddie Orr (Rumson, N.J.), junior Rachel Helbling (McDonald, Pa.), sophomore Kayla O'Connell (Marshfield, Mass.) and senior Brooke Fazio (Basking Ridge, N.J.) took first place with a time of 3:49.15.
Fazio, O'Connell and Helbling took three of the top four places in the 800-meter competition as well. Fazio finished first with a time of 2:06.50, which is the 14th-best time in the country and paces the Atlantic 10. O'Connell finished in third (2:11.57), just shy of redshirt senior Maria Acosta's, running unattached, second-place time of 2:11.56. Helbling, making her 800m debut, took fourth with a time of 2:13.78.
Sophomore Kamryn Ross (Richmond, Va.) finished ninth (25.81) in the 200-meter dash.
The Spiders are back in action for the Camel City-Elite Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C., Saturday, February 20.
