RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's lacrosse team eight-game win streak was snapped Friday, by No. 16 Virginia in a 15-9 loss at Robins Stadium.
The Spiders (1-1) answered the Cavaliers (2-0) opening goal just twenty seconds later when sophomore Kendall Duffy (Sinking Spring, Pa.) scored off of a pass from fellow sophomore Lindsey Frank (Gansevoort, N.Y.) at the 27:28 mark.
UVA would then go on a seven-goal run, including converting four free position shots, to take an 8-1 lead. Frank would halt the UVA offense briefly, scoring two of her Spider-leading three goals, one off of a pass from sophomore Arden Tierney (Port Washington, N.Y.) and one of her two free position goals.
Late in the first half, Madison Ostrick (Medford, N.Y.) connected with Sam Geiersbach (West Babylon, N.Y.) while Tierney collected her lone goal of the game to close out the half, down 11-5.
Play opened up a bit in the second half, as freshman Marymargaret Quinn (Alexandria, Va.) collected her first collegiate goal on a sharp pass from senior Nicole Concanon (Syosset, N.Y.). Geiersbach chipped in a free position goal, to cut into UVA's lead, 11-7. UVA would then go on a 4-2 run to keep any Richmond comeback at bay for the 15-9, victory.
Virginia edged Richmond in shots (32-31), draw controls (16-10), free position attempts and goals (7 of 12 – 3 of 5). The Spiders held the advantage in ground balls (18-13) and committed fewer turnovers (13-17).
The Spiders are back in action against William & Mary in Williamsburg, Saturday, February 27 with the opening draw set for 3 p.m.
