Spiders Finish A-10 Regular Season at Rhode Island

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team will finish the Atlantic 10 regular season on the road at Rhode Island in a rematch against the Rams on Friday, Feb. 26 at 4 p.m. inside the Thomas M. Ryan Center.
ABOUT RHODE ISLAND
Rhode Island is 9-7 on the season and is tied with Richmond with a 9-4 Atlantic 10 record. The Rams, with two A-10 games remaining, have clinched a winning A-10 season for the first time in 25 years. It is just the third winning season for Rhode Island in their A-10 history. Redshirt junior Emmanuelle Tahane, a transfer from Missouri, leads the team in scoring at 14.4 points per game and has posted eight double-doubles. Marie Foppossi is second in scoring at 11.9 points per game. Freshman Catherine Cairns, a two-time A-10 Rookie of the Week selection, leads the team in three-pointers made with 38. Cairns has hit two three-pointers or more in 11 games this season.
HISTORY AGAINST RHODY
This will be the 26th all-time meeting between the two teams with Richmond leading the all-time series with a 19-6 record. The Rams have won three-straight in the series, including the most recent battle, a 56-53 win at the Robins Center. Rhode Island outscored Richmond 13-7 in the fourth quarter after trailing by three points after three quarters. It is the only loss the Spiders have suffered after holding a lead after three quarters. Emmanuelle Tahane posted a double-double of 25 points and 13 rebounds. Tahane missed two shots off 11-for-13 shooting. Kate Klimkiewicz finished with 17 points and seven rebounds in the loss. In the last meeting on the road, Richmond lost a tough overtime contest 76-70 on Jan. 7, 2020. Claire Holt scored a career-high 23 points and Klimkiewicz had 16 points. The Rams used another fourth quarter comeback outscoring UR 20-10.
SPIDERS LOCK DOWN FIELD GOAL DEFENSE
Richmond is third in the Atlantic 10 in field goal defensive holding teams to just 35.6 percent from the field. Only Dayton (34.8) and Saint Louis (35.2) have a better percentage defensively. The Spiders are 22nd in the nation in field goal percentage defense. UR held La Salle to just 30.4 percent shooting from the field on Feb. 20 and Saint Joseph's to just 29.0 percent shooting on Feb. 19. In the last six games (4-2), the Spiders have given up 65 points or more once in a road loss at Dayton (72 points).
SENIOR DAY MAGIC FOR ALEX PARSON - 80 STARTS IN A ROW
Senior Alex Parson started her 80th game in a row on Senior Day against La Salle. Parson started the game by drawing a charge on the defensive end. She finished by tying her season high with nine points, including a clutch three-pointer late in the fourth quarter. Parson has started all 18 games this season and has dished out 40 assists to only 29 turnovers. Parson is 12-for-15 from the free throw line for the season. Parson has played in 110 games, starting 89 as a Spider. Parson has averaged 7.5 points per game (30 points) in her last four games.
WELCOME BACK EMMA SQUIRES, PROVIDING BENCH SPARK
Junior Emma Squires had to work her way back after offseason surgery and played in three games in January before breaking out in her last three games in February. Squires scored 12 points off the bench, all in the second quarter, at Saint Louis. Squires shot 5-for-8 from the field and was 2-for-3 from the three-point line. She had nine points in the home win against Saint Joseph's going 7-for-9 from the free throw line and had 10 points in the win against La Salle. Squires is averaging 10.3 points per game (31 points) in her last three games and will return home (Kingston, Mass.) in the upcoming road trip to Rhode Island (83 miles).
REBOUNDING BATTLE KEY TO SPIDER SUCCESS
Richmond continues to work on rebounding as a key part of their success. UR outrebounded La Salle, 48-36, in their six-point win on Feb. 20. The Spiders are 9-0 when they win the rebounding battle and a perfect 8-0 in A-10 play. All four A-10 losses have been when they got outrebounded. Sophomore Elaina Chapman leads the team in rebounding at 7.2 boards per game and Klimkiewicz is second at 6.6 boards per game. Freshman Addie Budnik is third at 5.0 rebounds per game.
