Spider Hockey Drops Spring Season Opener 3-1 at VCU

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond field hockey team opened the 2021 spring season with a 3-1 loss at VCU Saturday afternoon at Cary Street Field.
The Spiders fall to 0-1 on the season while the Rams improve to 2-0.
Sophomore Evie Hanson (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored the game's first goal at the 6:14 mark in the first quarter, putting in a rebound off VCU's goalkeeper.
VCU would tie the game in the waning moments of the first quarter and take the lead in the 24th minute of the second quarter.
The Spider defense, led by sophomore goalkeeper Erika Latta (Midlothian, Va.) in her first career start, kept the Rams off the board in the third quarter. Sophomore Tess Keppel (Baltimore, Md.) broke up a VCU corner after Latta made a huge save on a previous VCU corner to keep the Spiders within a goal after three quarters. Latta had four saves in the game.
VCU scored their final goal in the 50th minute to seal the victory.
Richmond was held to just four shots while VCU tallied 11. VCU also held a 5-1 advantage in corners with four of their five corners coming in the third quarter.
The Spiders return to action Saturday, March 20 against Davidson for a 11 a.m. start in Davidson, N.C.
