03/13/2021 | Men's Lacrosse
LEXINGTON, Va. – Numerous records fell Saturday afternoon as the University of Richmond men's lacrosse program opened Southern conference play with a dominating 23-6 victory over hosting VMI at Drill field No. 2. The 19th ranked Spiders 23-goal output was the highest in a single game in program history, surpassing a 21-goal effort against NJIT in 2015.
Sophomore attack Dalton Young (Chantilly, Va.) broke the school record for goals in a game, scoring seven goals in the opening half, needing just 23:34 on the clock to set the new mark. He finished with seven goals on eight shots, after entering the game with five goals in the first four games this year and just nine in his career prior to today's breakout performance. The seven goals ties the Southern Conference record for goals in a game.
Junior face-off specialist Jacob Griffin (Skokie, Ill.) also set new records in the victory. Griffin won 22-of-26 faceoffs Saturday, setting a new Richmond record surpassing the previous record of 20 held by Peter Moran in 2014. His 22 faceoff wins is tied for seventh most in SoCon history. Griffin also finished with a program-record 16 ground balls, breaking Moran's record off 11 and being the sixth most in a game in SoCon history.
The Spiders as a team set a program record with 27 faceoff wins, finishing the game 27-of-31. Additionally, Richmond notched a program-record 57 shots in the win, surpassing the previous mark of 54 set against VMI in 2020.
Twelve different Spiders scored in the victory as Richmond improved to 30-5 all-time in SoCon play – the most wins of any program during that same span. Senior attack Ryan Lanchbury (Burlington, Ontario) added two goals and two assists, moving into a tie for second place all-time in program history with Mitch Goldberg with 102 career goals.
Senior midfielder Tyler Shoults (Warners, N.Y.) finished with a season-high five points, scoring two goals and added three assists. Freshman Lance Madonna (East Syracuse, N.Y.) and sophomore Richie Connell (Evergreen, Colo.) each added a pair of goals while seven other Spiders scored one goal each.
Senior goalie Jack Rusbuldt (Richmond, Va.) played the first three quarters and posted six saves. Redshirt freshman Devin Craven (McLean, Va.) played the final 15 minutes and made one save in his collegiate debut.
Richmond continues its two-game road swing in league play next Saturday when it travels to Bellarmine. Game time is set for noon in Louisville, Ky.
