
Spiders Coast to Win vs William & Mary

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. -- The Richmond Spiders women's golf team defeated William & Mary in a 36-hole match Sunday at Independence Golf Club, improving to 2-0 in a pair of matches vs the Tribe this spring. The Spiders combined to shoot a 14-over 302 in the first round on Sunday morning, giving them a 16-shot advantage heading into the second and final round. Both Richmond and William & Mary posted identical team scores of 307 (+19) on Sunday afternoon, giving the Spiders a comfortable 609-625 victory.Â
Junior Naomi Mitchell led Richmond with a 5-over 149, tied for the best of any golfer in the 13-person field. Mitchell separated herself on the Par 5s, playing them in 3-under par, three shots better than anyone else in the field. Junior Emily Ward was two shots behind Mitchell at 151 (+7), and freshman Rory Weinfurther was two more shots down the leaderboard at 153 (+9), good for fifth place and six shots clear of anyone else in the field.Â
Sophomore Muskan Uppal shot 77 in the second round, five shots lower than her Round 1 score, to finish at 159 (+15). She tied freshman Claire Yioulos, who was playing as individual. Yioulos recorded six birdies in her 36 holes Sunday, tied for most in the field. Sophomore Vicky Zhu was two shots back at 161 (+17).
Freshman Kendall Miller (170, +26) and senior Ally Steffen (173, +29) competed as individuals. After the match, Steffen was honored by her Spiders teammates with a surprise celebration in advance of her upcoming graduation.Â
Richmond also defeated William & Mary in February, edging the Tribe 318 (+30) to 322 (+34) in an 18-hole match at Kingsmill Resort.Â
The Spiders will return to Kingsmill next week for the Kingsmill Spring Intercollegiate on March 28-29.Â
