WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Richmond Spiders women's golf team finished second in the 12-team Kingsmill Spring Intercollegiate on Tuesday, shooting a 15-over 303 in the third round to finish the event at 59-over par, 11 shots behind champion Delaware.
The second-place finish was the best for the Spiders since they tied with Appalachian State for the team title at the six-team Bucknell Spring Break Intercollegiate in March 2019. Entering Tuesday, Richmond hadn't finished in the top two in an event with more than six teams since the Kingsmill Fall Intercollegiate in September 2018.
Richmond was led by freshman Rory Weinfurther, who tied for second in the field of 67 at 226 (+10) after shooting a 1-over par 73 in Tuesday's final round. Weinfurther is the first Spider women's golfer to finish in the top two in an event with more than 40 competitors since September 2017, when Elsa Diaz won the Boston College Intercollegiate.
Weinfurther registered eight pars and just one bogey on the front nine Tuesday before recording three pars, three birdies, and three bogeys on the back.
"I hit a lot of greens and drove the ball really well," said Weinfurther of the keys to the best showing of her brief college career. "My putting was good too so everything was working together which I'm very happy with!"
Junior Emily Ward finished four shots back of Weinfurther at 230 (+14). Ward tied for seventh, the third top-10 finish of her career.
Sophomore Muskan Uppal recorded the first top-20 finish in a full-field event in her career, tying for 13th at 236 (+20). Uppal shot a 7-over 79 for the second straight round on Tuesday.
Sophomore Vicky Zhu and junior Naomi Mitchell both finished at 241 (+25), tied for 20th in the field. Zhu shot a 2-over 74 on Tuesday, second best among all Spiders and an 11-shot improvement from her Round 2 score.
Playing as an individual, freshman Claire Yioulos finished 41st at 253 (+37).
Richmond has just one event remaining prior to the Patriot League Championship, which will be held on April 24-25 at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa. The Spiders will competed in the Cavalier Match Play event at Birdwood Golf Course in Charlottesville, Va. on April 6-7.
