Concannon Leads No. 15 Women’s Lacrosse In 14-8 Victory Over VCU

RICHMOND, Va. – The No. 15 University of Richmond women's lacrosse team extended their winning streak to five games Sunday with a 14-8 win over crosstown rival VCU at Robins Stadium in Atlantic 10 play.
The Richmond (6-1, 2-0 A-10) offense got going with a person-up goal by sophomore Kendall Duffy (Sinking Spring, Pa.) fed by fellow sophomore Lindsey Frank (Gansevoort, N.Y.). Frank then scored the first of her three goals on the day unassisted to give the Spiders a 2-0 lead at the 25:00 mark. Frank also finished the day with two assists and two draw controls to move to a team-high 20 goals and nine assists on the season.
VCU answered with a quick goal to cut the lead in half, but sophomore Arden Tierney (Port Washington, N.Y.) scored two-straight goals unassisted to push the Spiders lead up to three at 4-1. Tierney also chipped in four draw controls, a ground ball and a caused turnover in the win. Junior Evelyn Roberts (Memphis, Tenn.) scored the Spiders' fifth goal of the game and her fifth of the season.
After VCU added a second goal, senior Nicole Concannon (Syosset, N.Y.) started her personal scoring barrage, tallying her first of a career-high four goals to lead the Spiders. Concannon added her second goal of the half off a Frank pass to stop VCU's two-score run and put Richmond up 7-4 at the 8:27 mark.
Richmond's Frank and Duffy scored back-to-back unassisted goals, after a VCU scored person-up goal, to take a 9-5 lead into halftime.
The Rams scored the first goal of the second half, but the Spiders tallied two person-up goals by Concannon and Frank to go up 11-6 at the 19:24 mark. Sophomore Sophia DiCenso (Foxboro, Mass.) also chipped in two unassisted goals around Concannon's fourth goal of the day to seal the 14-8 victory.
Richmond goalie Megan Gianforte (Brielle, N.J.) tallied eight saves, allowed all eight VCU goals and picked up a ground ball.
Richmond led VCU (4-4, 0-1A-10) in shots (44-20), shots on goal (34-16), ground balls (19-5) draw controls (16-8) and free position shots (9-7). VCU's goalie Gillian Belfiore tallied 20 saves on the day.
Richmond continues Atlantic 10 action Thursday, April 1, when the Spiders head on the road to take on Davidson. Opening draw is set for 6:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
