No. 13 Women’s Lacrosse Collects Crosstown Series Over VCU

RICHMOND, Va. – No. 13 University of Richmond women's lacrosse team defeated VCU 19-13 to sweep the season series Friday afternoon at Cary Street Field. With the win, the Spiders extended their winning streak to six games and moved to 7-1 on the year and 3-0 in Atlantic 10 action.
The Richmond offense was paced by Sam Geiersbach (West Babylon, N.Y.), who tallied four goals and three assists. Geiersbach sits sixth all time in program history with 155 career goals, fifth in assists with 92, and fifth with 247 total points.
Arden Tierney (Port Washington, N.Y.) reached 102 career draw controls with seven draw controls on the day. She also chipped in three goals for her sixth multi-goal game of the season.
VCU (6-7, 2-3 A10) scored the first goal of the game, but the Richmond offense kicked it into gear to score the game's next seven goals. Rachel Ziemba (Cazenovia, N.Y.) scored back-to-back goals, assisted by Geiersbach and Lindsey Frank (Gansevoort, N.Y.). Geiersbach and Tierney chipped in two goals each during the stretch, while Sophia DiCenso (Foxboro, Mass.) tallied her first of her three goals for the game.
The Rams tallied three-straight to get within three at 7-4, before Madison Ostrick (Medford, N.Y.) scored off a Geiersbach pass.
VCU got a fifth goal of the half with a minute left in the half, but Geiersbach answered with her third goal of the game with two seconds to go before heading into the lockerroom.
Tierney scored her third goal of the day to open the second half. VCU tried to stop the UR offense with a quick goal, but two DiCenso goals bookended a Frank goal to push the lead to 13-6. Frank also chipped in a team-leading eight draw controls while DiCenso had three.
Geiersbach and Nicole Concannon (Syossett, N.Y.) tallied unassisted goals to push the Spiders lead to 15-7 midway through the half.
VCU used a three-goal run to get within five at 15-10 with 10 minutes left in the game, but Richmond would get goals from Frank, Becca Sturtz (Sparks, Md.) and two from Evelyn Roberts (Memphis, Tenn.) to seal the 19-13 victory.
Goalie Megan Gianforte (Brielle, N.J.) tallied 13 saves and allowed 13 goals.
Richmond had 32 of 39 shots on goal, compared to VCU's 26 of 33 shots on goal. Richmond collected more draw controls, 20-14, and ground balls, 13-12, while VCU tallied more free position shots, 10-2.
Richmond stays on the road for Atlantic 10 play, as the team heads to Fairfax, Va., to take on George Mason Sunday. Opening draw is set for 12 p.m. on ESPN+.
