Football Moves Up To No. 15 In Both Polls

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond football team continued its climb up the national rankings as the Spiders are ranked No. 15 in the country in the Stats Perform FCS poll and the AFCA Coaches' Poll. The Spiders moved up six spots in the STATS FCS national poll after being ranked No. 21 last week and up five spots in the AFCA Coaches' Poll. The No. 15 ranking is their highest ranking since 2017 (No. 13 vs. Towson).
Richmond hosts its second-straight at Robins Stadium this week with a top 15 matchup as the Spiders welcome in No. 1 James Madison. The game marks the fifth time Richmond has played a team ranked No. 1 in the country and first time since 2017. The Spiders have yet to defeat a team ranked No. 1 in the country in program history. Saturday's game is set for a noon kickoff and will be broadcast on NBC Sports Washington and FloFootball.
The Spiders are 3-0 on the year after posting a 31-17 victory over visiting Elon. Richmond limited the Phoenix to only 234 yards of total offense, including 21 yards rushing in the victory. Sophomore linebacker Tristan Wheeler (Bethlehem, Pa.) recorded a career-high 14 tackles, including four on special teams and two tackles for loss. Redshirt senior defensive end Darius Reynolds (Yorktown, Va.) led the Spiders with three sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss as Richmond finished with four sacks on the day.
Offensively, the Spiders produced 450 yards of total offense, including 192 rushing yards thanks to the three-headed attack of redshirt sophomore running back Aaron Dykes (Knoxville, Tenn.), sophomore running back Savon Smith (Winchester, Va.) and redshirt-senior quarterback Joe Mancuso (Blairsville, Ga.).
Dykes finished with 11 carries for 70 yards and a touchdown while Smith had 10 carries for 69 yards and a touchdown. Mancuso carried it six times for 48 yards marking the third-straight game the Spiders have had three rushers over 45 yards this season.
On the season, the Spiders are holding opponents to 55.0 yards rushing per game while rushing for 179.3 yards per game offensively. The Spiders have three players averaging over 55 yards per game on the ground with Dykes leading the way with 193 yards rushing on 37 carries. Mancuso is second on the team with 171 yards rushing on 32 carries while Smith chips in 168 yards rushing on 36 carries.
