ZIONS CROSSROADS, Va. -- Competing against two of the nation's top teams, Richmond's women's golf team matched its best score in its last six competitive rounds Friday at Spring Creek Golf Club. Richmond's team score of 309 (+21) tied the Spiders best since shooting 307 (+19) in the second round of Tampa's Old Friends Invitational on February 17, 2020.
Three Spiders carded rounds of 76 (+4), tied for eighth in the field of 22. Emily Ward was one of just four golfers to play the Par Fives under par (-1) on Friday en route to her 76, while fellow junior Naomi Mitchell posted 12 pars, five bogeys, and one birdie for her round of 76.
Playing as an individual, freshman Claire Yioulos also shot 76 while playing the Par Threes under par (-1). Fellow freshman Rory Weinfurther was one shot back at 77 (+5), which tied for 14th. Weinfurther and Yiolos both carded three birdies, tied for third most in the field.
Sophomore Muskan Uppal provided the Spiders final team score with an 80 (+8). Vicky Zhu shot 89 (+17), while a pair of Spiders competing as individuals, Kendall Miller and Ally Steffen, shot 80 (+8) and 83 (+11), respectively.
Richmond's team score of 309 was five shots behind Old Dominion, which entered the match ranked 48th in GolfStat's team rankings, and 18 shots behind Virginia, which was ranked 10th entering Friday.
Richmond will be back in action on Monday and Tuesday, competing in UNCW's River Landing Classic at the River Landing Golf Club in Wallace, N.C.
"We are getting better and I loved seeing the improvements today," said Spider coach Calle Barlow. "I'm very excited to get to UNC Wilmington!"
