Baseball's Comeback Attempt Falls Short at William & Mary
04/02/2021 | Baseball
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Richmond baseball scored runs in the seventh and eighth innings, but couldn't find the tying run late as it suffered a 4-3 loss at the hands of the William & Mary Tribe at Plumeri Park Friday night. The Spiders fell behind in the 3-0 in the fourth inning and couldn't find the big hit it needed to continue their five-game winning streak. Richmond falls to 10-5 on the year, while William & Mary improves to 5-12.
Jacob Marcus (Malvern, Pa.) started on the mound. The right-hander threw 3.2 innings, allowing a season-high three earned runs to go with a strikeout while picking up the loss. Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) was the first reliever used, allowing an earned run of his own to go with a strikeout before giving way to Jarrad DeLarso (Marlton, N.J.). DeLarso retired the one hitter he faced. Josh Willitts (Southampton, N.J.) threw a career-high 2.0 innings without allowing a run and allowing just one hit and Eli Kimbell (New York, N.Y.) threw a scoreless eighth.
The Spider offense knocked out 10 hits in the contest, led by a 3-for-5, two RBI performance from Wyatt Ulrich (International Falls, Minn.) Jared Sprague-Lott (Philadelphia, Pa.) added a 2-for-4 effort and drove in the other Spider run. Drew Blakely (Galesburg, Mich.), Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.), Chris Rinaldi (Westfield, N.J.), Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.) and Rich Ciufo (Medford, N.Y.) all added one hit in the contest and Hipsman led the team with a pair of runs.
The Tribe opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first, starting the game with a lead-off single up the middle. The next hitter followed with a double to the fence to bring in the first run and put William & Mary up early.
William & Mary added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth as they rode a double and four walks to score two runs and extend their lead to 3-0.
The Spiders got on the board in the top of the fifth as Hipsman started the frame with a walk and came around to score when Ulrich hammered a triple to right center to get him in.
The Tribe scored another after two walks put two on and a single through the left side brought in the fourth run in the bottom of the fifth.
Richmond scratched their way back into the game, scoring runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Hipsman started the rally in the seventh with a single up the middle and moved up following a Sprague-Lott single through the left side. After a Ciufo sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position, Ulrich answered the bell once again, singling to second base to bring in a run and cut the lead in half.
In the eighth, it was Rinaldi who drove a single to right and stole second with two outs to get into scoring position. Sprague-Lott delivered with a single the other way to cut the score to 4-3, Tribe.
The Spiders were down in order in the ninth as the comeback attempt fell short.
The Tribe and the Spiders are back at it at Pitt Field Sunday when the two get set for a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
