Spider Hockey Falls to VCU in Shootout Showdown

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond field hockey team fell in a 2-1 shootout thriller to VCU at Crenshaw Field Saturday night.
VCU won the shootout tallying three of four shots, while Richmond only collected one, by senior Cadera Smith (Doylestown, Pa.).
Richmond (2-2, 2-2 Atlantic 10) took a quick lead in the second minute of the game on a goal by Steffie Bongers (Weert, the Netherlands) off a corner play inserted by Olivia Frazier (Cary, N.C.) and stick stopped by Tess Keppel (Baltimore, Md.). Keppel also registered a defensive save.
VCU (6-0, 5-0 A-10) answered with their own goal in the third minute on a corner play.
After that, the teams were deadlocked in a defensive battle for the next 57 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods. VCU held the advantage in shots (13-4), shots on goal (7-4) and corners (6-3).
Sophomore Spider goalkeeper Erika Latta (Midlothian, Va.) tallied six saves in the contest.
Richmond is back in action Saturday, April 10 to take on Saint Louis University at 11 a.m. in St. Louis, Mo.
