Spider Hockey Falls to No. 15 Rutgers in Season Opener

DURHAM, N.C. – The University of Richmond field hockey team fell 5-2 to No. 15 Rutgers Saturday in a scorcher at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium on the campus of Duke University.
Rutgers moves to 2-0 on the season while the Spiders fall to 0-1.
After Rutgers netted the game's first goal at 5:11 in the first quarter, junior Lindsey Frank (Gansevoort, N.Y.) got the Spiders on the board at 10:19. Frank scored off a shot just inside the circle that bounced off the Scarlet Knights' goalie's foot and into the cage. Junior Tess Keppel (Baltimore, Md.) sent the pass up the field to feed Frank's offenisve run.
The Scarlet Knights added three goals in the third quarter to push their lead out to 4-1. Rutgers added a fifth goal at 49:34 in the fourth quarter.
Senior Steffie Bongers (Weert, The Netherlands) got in on the Spiders scoring action, netting a penalty stroke at 46:21 in the final period.
Junior goalkeeper Erika Latta (Midlothian, Va.) tallied eight of the Spiders nine saves, with junior Sutton Orndorff (Charlotte, N.C.) collecting a defensive save.
The Spiders return to Williams Field Sunday to take on No. 12 Duke (0-1) at 1 p.m. on ACC Network Extra (ESPN+).
