Bongers Paces Spider Field Hockey in Win Over Saint Louis

MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. – Senior Steffie Bongers (Weert, The Netherlands) led the University of Richmond Field Hockey team to a 4-0 victory over Saint Louis Friday afternoon.
Richmond moves to 1-5 on the season and 1-0 in Atlantic 10 play, while Saint Louis falls to 0-7 on the year and 0-1 in league action.
Bongers had a standout day against the Billikens, collecting six points on two goals and two assists. She scored the first goal of the game at the 12:45 mark in the first quarter, scoring off a penalty corner play inserted by Olivia Frazier (Cary, NC).
Stevie Drum (Virginia Beach, Va.) collected her first collegiate goal in the second quarter, scoring from the top of the circle off a pass from Bongers.
Bongers then added her second goal of the game and the second goal of the second quarter, again scoring on a Spider penalty corner play. This time, junior Tess Keppel (Baltimore, Md.) served as the stick stopper for Frazier's insert pass.
Frazier tallied her first goal of the season at the 54:57 mark in the contest, connecting on a pass from Bongers off a penalty corner play.
Junior goalkeeper Erika Latta (Midlothian, Va.) collected the shutout, the third shutout of her career, and made two saves on eight shots faced.
Richmond tallied a season-highs in shots (17), shots on goal (10) and penalty corners (10), while holding Saint Louis to eight shots, two shots on goal and four penalty corners.
The Spiders are back in action on Sunday to take on Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. The 12 p.m. contest at the IU Field Hockey Complex will air on BigTen Network Plus (subscription needed).
