Borger Takes First as Cross Country Begins Season with Spider Alumni Open

MECHANICSVILLE, Va. – The University of Richmond cross country team took the course at Pole Green Park bright and early Saturday morning. The Spider men ran first in a five-kilometer race. Richmond's Peter Borger (Malvern, Pa.) was the first to cross the finish line as the men finished second behind the Virginia Cavaliers. The women had a similar result, taking second, also behind the Cavaliers.
Borger ran his five-kilometer race in an astounding 14:45.8, setting a new personal record for cross country by nearly 39 seconds. His time is also a new course record for the 5k race at Pole Green Park. After three Virginia runners finished behind Borger, Noah Yuro (Howell, N.J.) took fifth at 14:51.9, breaking his personal record by over a full minute. Noah Campbell (Montpelier, Va.) added a 15th place finish at 15:26.1. Robert Gunia (Fredericksburg, Va.) led a trio of Spiders that finished 22nd, 23rd and 24th. Behind Gunia was Jake Schindel (Richmond, Va.), and Riley Fletcher (East Northport, Va.), finishing in times of 15:36.2, 15:36.6 and 15:36.6, respectively.
Tanner Crochet (Monmouth, N.J.) finished in 26th at 15:42.1. Sean Doolan (Loudonville, Ky.), Jordan Bendura (Glen Allen, Va.) and Patrick Sutphin (Mechanicsville, Va.) rounded out the Spider finisher, taking 31st, 39th and 40th, respectively.
On the women's side, 2021 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year Elizabeth Stockman (Rocky Hill, Conn.) was the first Spider finisher, taking third at 11:00.4. Lily Snow (Richmond, Va.) added a seventh place finish at 11:13.1, and Kate McAndrew (Denville, N.J.) added a top 10 finish, coming in ninth at 11:15.2.
Rounding out the top seven Spider finishers were the grouping of Anna George (Montville, N.J.), Izzy Blaylock (Dallas, Texas), Kendra Smither (Richmond, Va.) and Laurel Kurtz (Flemington, N.J.). George and Blaylock were back-to-back at 14th and 15th, finishing in 11:32.4 and 11:35.3, respectively. Smither and Kurtz were at 18th and 19th with times of 11:36.2 and 11:40.8.
The Spiders return to action in two weeks as they will take part in the James Madison Invitational on September 17th.
