Wierman Scores Her First Goal of the Season in Loss at Old Dominion
09/05/2021 | Women's Soccer
NORFOLK, Va. – The University of Richmond soccer team suffered a 3-1 loss to the Old Dominion Monarchs Sunday evening at the ODU Soccer Complex. The Spiders gave up two goals in the first half, and played to a tie over the final 45 minutes. Molly Wierman (Sea Girt, N.J.) responded with her first goal of the season in the 59th minute to cut into the Monarch's lead. Richmond falls to 1-4 on the season, while ODU improves to 3-2.
"Old Dominion is one of the best teams we played this fall and in the first half, we didn't connect well offensively and gave them too much space defensively." Head coach Marty Beall said, "However, I'm really proud of how our players responded in the second half. We were so much better both offensively and defensively and went toe-to-toe with them. The biggest challenge we have right now is putting together a complete game. That's our goal as we return to President's Field Thursday afternoon against High Point."
Richmond was outshot by the Monarchs 16-5 Sunday night, with one of Richmond's five shots on frame. The teams were even on corners at four each, while Old Dominion was called for 15 fouls compared to the Spiders 14. Claire Hinkle (Tipp City, Ohio) played the full 90 minutes in net, picking up five saves in the loss.
Wierman was one of five Spiders with a shot in during the match. Jessie Prillaman (Magnolia, Del.), Emma Kennedy (Blacksburg, Va.), Elle Dziadzio (Bernardsville, N.J.) and Nora Santelli (Shaker Heights, Ohio) all had a shot in the contest.
Old Dominion scored a pair of first half goals before extending its lead to 3-0 in the 58th minute. Richmond responded just a minute later. The Old Dominion defense played a pass back towards its own net without a lot of force. Wierman made a run at it, getting there a step before the keeper. She regained possession of the loose ball in front of the net and sent a shot in on the empty frame right before a Monarch brought her down with a slide tackle to cut the lead to 3-1.
The Spiders open a two-game homestand this Thursday when they host the High Point Panthers at 6 p.m., followed by a home match with the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Sunday afternoon.
