RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond field hockey team fell to No. 20 Massachusetts, 2-1, Friday afternoon in Atlantic 10 Conference action at Crenshaw Field.
Richmond, now 6-10 on the season and 2-4 in league action, returns to Crenshaw Field Sunday, to host Stanford at 11 a.m. on ESPN+. Prior to the start of the game, Richmond's six seniors, as well as Stanford's four seniors and two graduate students, will be recognized.
After a scoreless first quarter, UMass took a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute of the contest. Spiders sophomore goalie Kristen Rake (Wynnewood, Pa.) made a save, then junior Alexandria Lavelle (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) tallied a defensive save, but the Spiders were unable to clear the ball out of UMass' attacking third. Rake tallied all four of her saves in the first half.
UMass took a 2-0 lead in the 36th minute, as both teams were playing a person down due to yellow cards.
The Spiders picked up the intensity in the fourth quarter, collecting two-straight corners. She collected the outlet pass and ran by all of the UMass defenders and sent a bouncing shot past the UMass keeper who came out of the cage.
The Minutewomen held the advantage in shots, 14-10, and corners, 6-2, over the Spiders.
