Women’s Basketball Shakes Off Late Rally by UMBC for the Win

BALTIMORE, Md. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team shook off a late rally by UMBC to capture the squad's second road victory of the season, 64-57, Thursday at Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena.
With the victory, Richmond moves to 3-1 on the season and returns to the Robins Center Sunday to host Hampton for a 2 p.m. contest on ESPN+.
The Spiders took a quick 5-0 lead to start the game, including a pair of free throws by Addie Budnik before the game began after UMBC was issued a technical. UMBC built out an 11-7 lead, on three-straight three-pointers and a jumper, and took advantage of a three-plus minute offensive drought by the Spiders. UR got back-to-back three pointers from Emilija Krista Grava and Rachel Ullstrom to tie the game at 13-all, but UMBC wrapped up the quarter on a 5-4 run for a one-point lead 18-17 after the first quarter.
The squads exchanged two lead changes in the second quarter before the Spiders scored seven points over UMBC's three-minute offensive drought to regain the lead. Grava tallied five points of her game-high 16, while Grace Townsend chipped in a fast-break layup. The Spiders strung together a three-pointer by Ullstrom, a bucket by Maggie Doogan and a free throw by Siobhan Ryan to take a 37-31 lead into halftime.
Katie Hill opened the second half with a midrange jumper to set the tone for the Richmond offense. The Spiders built out a nine-point lead three different times on the Retrievers, squashing each time UMBC tried to make a run. UMBC made a shot at buzzer, but Richmond held onto a six-point lead, 51-45.
Grava tallied the Spiders first two buckets of the fourth quarter, while Budnik tallied three points, while Hill chipped in two points. UMBC tallied a late run, getting within three at 60-57 with a minute left in the half. Hill and Townsend each made two free throws to seal the Spiders victory, 64-57.
