Men’s Lacrosse Drops Season Opener At No. 4 North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL N.C. – The University of Richmond men's lacrosse team opened the 2022 season with a back-and-forth affair Friday evening as the Spiders rallied from an early deficit to take a second half lead, before falling to No. 4 North Carolina 13-9 at Dorrance Field.
Redshirt sophomore goalie Devin Craven (McLean, Va.) made his first career start and posted a career-best 16 saves against the Tar Heels. Craven's 16 saves are tied for sixth-most in a single game and the most by a Spider making their first career start in program history.
Senior attack Ryan Dunn (Towson, Md.) led six Spider scorers with his third career hat trick, notching three goals and leading the team with five shots. Young added two goals and an assist while graduate attack Ryan Lanchbury (Burlington, Ontario) dished out three assists.
Richmond saw the Tar Heels scored the game's first four goals before settling in with a Dalton Young (Chantilly, Va.) goal late in the first quarter. The Spiders scored three-straight goals and ran off a stretch scoring six out of seven goals, taking a 6-5 lead into halftime. Richmond out-scored North Carolina 4-1 in the second quarter when it won 5 out of six faceoffs in the 15-minute period.
Sophomore Luke Grayum (Ardmore, Pa.) pulled the Spiders within one early in the second quarter, scoring on a man-up advantage. Sophomore Lance Madonna (East Syracuse, N.Y.) tied the game with his first goal of the year and the Spiders had their first lead with 35 seconds remaining in the opening half on Dunn's second tally of the game.
The teams traded goals in the third quarter with Dunn scoring his third at the 6:10 mark of the third, giving the Spiders an 8-7 lead. The Tar Heels responded four-straight goals and out-scored the Spiders 6-1 in the close 21:10 of the game, securing their first win of the year.
Freshman Jared Chenoy (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) made his collegiate debut and won 8-of-22 faceoffs and picked up five ground balls. Senior defender Jake Saunders (Oakville, Ontario) led the Spider defense with five caused turnovers on the day.
Chris Gray led the Tar Heels with a game-high eight points, scoring four goals and adding four assists.
The Spiders return to action next weekend with their home opener Saturday against Marist. Game time at Robins Stadium is set for 11 a.m.
