LYNCHBURG, Va. -- With less than one minute remaining in overtime, Kendall Duffy caught a pass from Grace Muldoon, spun over her left shoulder away from a defender, and fired the ball past the goalie and into the back of the net to secure a 13-12 overtime win for the Spiders Saturday at Liberty. The victory moved Richmond to 3-0 on the season and 8-0 all-time against the Flames.Â
Duffy's goal snapped a string of five straight scores by Liberty and was Richmond's first tally since the 8:46 mark of the fourth quarter. The Spiders broke what had been a closely-contested game wide open by scoring the final five goals of the third period, turning a 6-5 deficit into a 10-6 lead entering the fourth quarter.
Following a Flames goal early in the final period of regulation, Sophie DiCenso and Duffy scored for the Spiders, giving Richmond a seemingly safe 12-7 advantage with less than nine minutes to play.Â
But the Flames held the Spiders scoreless for the rest of regulation while scoring five goals of their own, tying the game at 12 on Mackenzie Lehman's goal with 1:11 to play. Richmond had a chance to win it at the end of regulation, but Lindsey Frank lost the ball in front of the Flames net in the final seconds.
In the first half of the first overtime period, Frank's shot was saved by Liberty's Jennifer Soriero with just five seconds on the clock. 13 seconds into the second half of OT, Frank had another chance, this time hitting the crossbar. With 1:45 remaining in overtime, Brittney Wright caused a Liberty turnover and Jax Donohue picked up the ground ball to give the Spiders possession. Less than a minute later, Muldoon found Duffy in a crease in front of the goal for the game-winner.Â
Duffy led Richmond with three goals and three assists for a career-best six points. Frank added three goals, giving her a team-high eight scores this season. Arden Tierney also scored twice for Richmond.Â
The teams were separated by no more than a goal for the game's first 42 minutes. Maggie Jordans's goal with 2:40 left in the third quarter made the score 8-6 in favor of Richmond, the largest lead for either team to that point.Â
The Spiders will play their next two contests at home, starting with a matchup against Stanford of the Pac-12 Friday at noon. The game can be seen on ESPN Plus.Â
