CHARLESTON, S.C. – The University of Richmond baseball team scored first to give starter Alden Mathes (Bromall, Pa.) the upper hand before toeing the rubber. A lead he didn't relinquish to capture his first win and shutout of the season, 2-0, Sunday at Shipyard Park.
The Spiders wrapped up the opening weekend with a 2-1 record, finishing second in the Swig & Swine College Classic.
"What can you say about Alden [Mathes] and Eli [Kimbell]? This is what we are excited about," head coach Tracy Woodson said. "Hopefully, this is what we will see on the mound throughout the year."
"Other than the one early inning, we were tremendous defensively. [Strong defense] gives the pitchers confidence to throw the ball over the play when you can make plays."
Jared Sprague-Lott (Philadelphia, Pa.) hit a bloop single over second baseball in the first to get the offense going. He advanced to second on a ground ball out by Mathes and took third on a throwing error by Air Force's catcher. Sprague-Lott then scored on a second Air Force error in the frame.
Over 6.1 innings of work, Mathes scattered three hits, two walks and struck out seven, including striking out the side in the fourth. He didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning and stranded the runner at third.
Eli Kimbell (New York, N.Y.) took over in the seventh, getting out of a two on with one out situation with a fly out to center then doubled off the Air Force runner on first.
In the top of the eighth, Christian Beal (Flossmoor, Ill.) reached after getting hit by the pitch and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Chase Conklin (Mullica Hill, N.J.). Mathes battled to draw a two-out walk to have two runners on for Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.). Beal flew around the bases to score the Spiders' insurance run from second on a fly ball from Toso to short right field.
Kimbell threw two more innings of scoreless relief, picking up two of his three strike outs in the ninth, for the save.
Richmond opens a 13-game home stand Tuesday, Feb. 22, welcoming in William & Mary to Pitt Field. First pitch is set for 1:30 PM.
