RICHMOND, Va. – Behind the quick work of starting pitcher Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.), the University of Richmond baseball team collected their sixth-straight victory Sunday, defeating Sacred Heart 9-3 at Pitt Field.
"Alden was tremendous on the hill," head coach Tracy Woodson said. "He pounded the strike zone today. Dom had great at-bats. Three of his four RBI hits were with two outs. He was a tough out today."
Mathes retired the first four Sacred Heart batters in order with three fly outs and a strikeout. But the Pioneers got on the scoreboard first, tagging Mathes for a two-run home run in the second inning before Mathes got out of the inning with a strikeout.
The Richmond offense got on the board in the third inning. D.J. Pacheco (Danvers, Mass.) singled up the middle, then Christian Beal (Flossmoor, Ill.) doubled him to third. Pacheco scored on a ground out by Mathes before Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) doubled in Beal to tie the game at 2-all.
With two on and two outs in the fifth, Toso hit a three-run home run to right center to put the Spiders up 5-2.
In the seventh, Beal got the Spider offense started with a single to left and easily stole second. After advancing to third on Mathes' sacrifice bunt, Beal was able to jog home on a Toso base hit to left. With the bases loaded, Chase Conklin (Mullica Hill, N.J.) hit a deep sac fly to center to score Toso and push Richmond's lead to 7-2.
Mathes (2-0) picked up his second win of the season, scattering two runs on four hits, walked one and struck out a season-high eight strikeouts in seven innings of work.
Brenden Argomaniz (Claremont, Calif.) took over for Mathes on the hill in the eighth. Sacred Heart picked up one run in the top of the eighth with two outs before Argomaniz tallied a strike out for the final out of the frame.
Pacheco led off the bottom of the eighth with a base hit and advanced to second on Beal's sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Pacheco scored on Toso's fourth hit of the day and collected his sixth RBI. Toso then scored the Spiders' 9th run of the game on a SHU error.
Rob Ready (Cape May, N.J.) threw eight pitches to retire the Sacred Heart batters, including a strikeout, in the ninth.
Richmond (6-1) returns to Pitt Field on Wednesday to host James Madison. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m. on ESPN Plus.
