Weinfurther finishes one stroke off program record at River Landing Classic

WALLACE, N.C. -- For a third straight round, Spiders sophomore Rory Weinfurther limited her mistakes in Tuesday's final round at the River Landing Classic, carding a 1-over 73 to finish the event at even par, tied for third in the field of 78. Weinfurther's 54-hole total matched the third-lowest score in program history, just one stroke behind the record owned by former Spider Tracy Martin, who shot a 1-under 215 at the Wendy's Invitational in 2012-13 and the Spider Invitational in 2011-12.Â
"My putting was definitely key this week," said Weinfurther. "Also just taking it one hole at a time and focusing on hitting the greens and giving myself birdie looks." Weinfurther registered eight birdies over 54 holes, but it was her ability to avoid trouble that kept her near the top of the leaderboard. Weinfurther's 40 pars were more than all but three golfers in the field and the most of any player to finish in the top seven.
This was Weinfurther's third career top-three finish along with her win at the 2021 Patriot League Championship and runner-up at the 2021 Kingsmill Spring Intercollegiate. It was her first top-three finish in an event with 70 or more individuals.Â
As a team, Richmond shot 301 (+13) in Tuesday's final round, falling back to a tie for ninth place among 14 teams at 893 (+29).Â
Junior Muskan Uppal carded her third straight score of 75 or better Tuesday, shooting 75 (+3) to finish tied for 30th at 223 (+7). Senior Naomi Mitchell also finished in the top 50, shooting 72-77-79/228 (+12) and tying for 46th.Â
The Spiders will return to action on March 19-20 at the Low Country Intercollegiate at Bear Creek Golf Club in Hilton Head, S.C.
