02/09/2022 | Women's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. – Four Spiders scored in double-figures Wednesday night, led by senior Claire Holt with a season-high 18 points, as Richmond fell 77-71 to Davidson at home. Richmond (13-11, 4-7 A-10) led by as much as 10 points in the second quarter, but Davidson (13-10, 4-7 A-10) exploded for 27 points in the third quarter en route to the win.
The Spiders hit a pair of early treys before Holt swiped a pass that led to a layup for Addie Budnik to put Richmond up 10-4 and force a Davidson timeout at 6:31 in the first. Emma Squires hit her second triple of the period at the buzzer to give Richmond a 20-15 lead heading into the second.
Squired knocked down her third 3-pointer of the night to push Richmond's lead to double-figures at 8:10 in the second, but Davidson answered with a 7-0 run to cut its deficit down to three points at 27-24 with 5:45 to go before taking a 31-30 lead at 2:02. Richmond drilled three triples in the last 1:37 of the frame to go into halftime with a 39-37 lead.
Davidson used an early 9-0 run in the third to jump out to a 49-41 lead before extending that lead to 59-44 with 3:31 left in the quarter, and the Wildcats entered the final frame ahead 64-53.
Holt opened up the fourth with a 3-pointer to cut Richmond's deficit back down to single-digits, and it sparked a run that saw Katie Hill shave the deficit to two points on two occasions, first with back-to-back layups at 7:05 and then again with a triple at 5:38. Townsend's layup at 3:34 to make it 71-69 would be as close as the Spiders would come to recovering for the win.
