Men’s Lacrosse Falls to No. 5 Georgetown

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond men's lacrosse team made a late run, but were unable to overcome an early deficit Saturday, falling to No. 5 Georgetown, 15-10, at Robins Stadium. The Spiders (3-3) are back in action Sunday, March 20, to host UMBC at 3 p.m. at Robins Stadium.
Junior attack Dalton Young (Chantilly, Va.) lead the way for the Spiders with three goals and an assist. He's had at least one assist in all six contests this season.
Graduate attack Ryan Lanchbury (Burlington, Ontario) tallied two goals and four assists, while freshman attack Max Merklinger (Mendham, N.J.) chipped in two goals. Graduate midfielder Luke Frankeny (Wilmington, N.C.) and senior attack Ryan Dunn (Towson, Md.) both tallied a goal and an assist each. Junior long stick midfielder Jake Kapp (Pepper Pike, Ohio) scored his first goal of the season in the third quarter.
Georgetown (5-1) jumped out to an early 5-0 lead on Richmond. Lanchbury found Merklinger for the first of back-to-back goals for Richmond at 5:09 in the first quarter. Dunn made it 5-2 with an unassisted goal 22 seconds later. Georgetown added two more goals in the period, sandwiched around a goal by Young, to take a 7-3 through the first 15 minutes of action.
Richmond held Georgetown to just three goals in the second quarter, while scoring three of their own to head to the locker room down 10-6. Lanchbury, Young and Frankeny all tallied goals in the period.
Kapp scored his first goal of the season to get the Spider offense going in the third quarter. Lanchbury tallied his second goal of the game to put Richmond within two at 10-8 at the 10:41 mark. The Hoyas tallied their lone goal of the period with eight seconds left.
Lanchbury found Merklinger for Richmond to again get within two goals early in the fourth quarter, 11-9. Georgetown tallied four more goals to put the game out of reach for the Spiders despite Lanchbury connecting with Young for his third goal of the day.
Spider goalies split time between the pipes against the Hoyas. Redshirt freshman Zach Vigue (Apex, N.C.) allowed nine goals and made six assists in just under 21 minutes, while redshirt sophomore Devin Craven (McLean, Va.) gave up six goals and made eight stops in over 39 minutes.
