RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond comeback magic fell short in the final game of the series against Holy Cross at Pitt Field Sunday, as the Spiders dropped a 9-7 decision to the Crusaders.

Richmond is back in action Wednesday, when the squad heads to Chapel Hill, N.C., to take on North Carolina. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium on ACC Network Extra.

Holy Cross (3-13) got to Richmond starter Brock Weirather (Polk City, Fla.) in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead on three hits and a walk. Weirather allowed seven runs, two earned, on seven hits and three walks, while striking out four in 4.2 innings, his shortest outing of the season.

In the bottom of the inning, Andrew Papantonis (Lebanon Township, N.J.) doubled to lead off and was followed by a walk from Will Gersky (Woodbury, Conn.). Jason Neff (West Palm Beach, Fla.) singled to score Papantonis while Gersky came home on Christian Beal (Flossmoor, Conn.) double down the right field line to tie the game. Neff broke the tie when he scored on Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) ground out. Beal then gave the Spiders a two-run lead, 4-2, as he scored on Dominic Toso's (Philadelphia, Pa.) base hit.

With the 2-for-5 day at the plate, Toso extended his hit-streak to 14 games and 32 hits on the season for a team-leading .471 average.

In the fifth, Holy Cross did the most damage against Weirather, hanging a five-spot on the board. The Crusaders rallied for five runs on three hits, two walks and a Richmond error.

The Spiders answered with three runs to tie the game at 7-all on Papantonis' three-run home run to left center.

Spider relievers freshman Jake Michel (Baltimore, Md.) and sophomore Dane Armson (Montoursville, Pa.) allowed the final two Holy Cross runs in the sixth and ninth respectfully. Michael, tagged with the loss, went 2.1 innings, allowing one unearned run on four walks. Sophomore Harrison Clifton (Henrico, Va.) got one out in the eighth, while allowing two hits. Armson struck out the two batters he faced in the eighth, but gave up a run on one hit and two walks in the ninth.
