Harrisonburg, Va. – The #15/19 University of Richmond women's lacrosse team battled back Wednesday, but fell to #21 James Madison on the road, 13-10.
The Spiders scored first when Arden Tierney caught a pass from Lindsey Frank, but that would be all the scoring Richmond saw in the first half as the Dukes (4-4) would go on an eight-goal run through the second quarter.
Down 8-1, the Spiders came out of the break re-energized and scored three unanswered goals thanks to Sophia DiCenso and Arden Tierney (2). DiCenso opened scoring in the third with a free position goal, then Arden Tierney scored one unassisted before picking up another on a successful woman-up free position attempt for the hat trick.
JMU responded in the third with three of its own to make it 11-4, then the Spiders went on a 4-0 run with free position goals by Marina Miller and Sophia DiCenso, a goal from Frank (Tierney) and one from Colleen Quinn (Kendall Duffy).
Now 11-8, the Dukes scored another just seconds in to the fourth before DiCenso eclipsed a new career high with her third goal of the game. The Dukes tacked on two more, then Miller tallied her second free position goal of the game.
Delaney Galvin recorded six saves in net while James Madison's Molly Dougherty made nine. The Spiders and the Dukes were even on shots (24) and shots on goal (19), while UR endged JMU in draw controls (14-12) and free position shots (11-7). The Dukes had 11 caused turnovers to Richmond's nine.
The Spiders return home to Robins Stadium when it takes on Wofford Sunday, March 20 at 11 a.m.
