Toso Extends Hit Streak in Spider Loss to Cornell
03/20/2022 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. – University of Richmond redshirt senior Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) laced a two-out double in the bottom of the ninth to not only extend the game, but it also extended his hit-streak to 17-straight games. Unfortunately, the Spiders come-back magic fell short as the squad was unable to finish the sweep of the series on Sunday, falling to Cornell 7-4 at Pitt Field.
The Spiders (12-5) continue action at home on Wednesday, hosting Towson at Pitt Field. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. on ESPN-Plus.
Richmond took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Jared Sprague-Lott (Philadelphia, Pa.), who led off the frame reaching on a hit-by-pitch, came home on Johnny Hipsman's (Chester, N.Y.) base hit up the middle of the infield. Jake Elbeery (North Andover, Mass.) came home on Chase Conklin's (Mullica Hills, N.J.) sacrifice fly, after singling to left field.
Cornell (3-8) tied the game in the fourth inning with a two-run home run.
Starting pitcher Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) helped himself in the fifth inning, scoring Conklin from third with a base hit. At the plate, Mathes went 3-for-5 with a RBI, while on the mound he collected a career-high 12 strikeouts, allowing four runs on six hits, four walks and one hit batter in eight-plus innings of work.
Richmond added another run in the seventh, as Christian Beal (Flossmoor, Ill.) scored on a Cornell wild pitch. Beal extended a streak of his own, reaching base in 16-straight games with two walks.
Cornell bats woke up in the top of the ninth, tallying five runs on three hits and two walks. Richmond reliever Vincent Corso (West Harrison, N.Y.) took the loss, allowing three runs on three hits and one hit batter in a third of an inning of work. Dane Armson (Montoursville, Pa.) got the final two outs, with one strikeout and one ground out.
