Ward, Spiders place fourth at Kingsmill

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Spiders senior Emily Ward recorded a pair of birdies in her final six holes to shoot an even-par 72 in the final round of the Kingsmill Spring Intercollegiate Tuesday at Kingsmill Resort and finish in fourth place in the field of 79. Playing in frigid and blustery conditions, Ward finished the 54-hole event at 223 (+7), the lowest tournament score of her career. Her fourth-place finish was her best result since finishing fourth in last year's Patriot League Championship.
A key for Ward throughout the event was her ability to take advantage of the par 3s. Ward combined for a score of 2-under par on par 3s, two shots better than any other player in the field.
As a team, the Spiders finished fourth in the 14-team event at 936, 72 strokes over par. Richmond recorded a team score of 318 (+30) for the second straight round Tuesday, but the Spiders were forced to count all four of their team scores instead of only the lowest four when freshman Lauren Jones was forced to withdraw with a hip injury prior to the round.
Sophomore Rory Weinfurther shot 81 (+9) and finished tied for ninth at 233 (+17), her sixth top-20 result in seven tournaments this season.
Junior Vicky Zhu shot 82 (+10) for a second-straight round, bringing her 54-hole total to 239 (+23), tied for 33rd in the field. Junior Kendall Miller shot 83 (+11) Tuesday and finished in a tie for 52nd at 246 (+30).
The fourth-place result was Richmond's third top-five tournament finish this season along with a third-place showing at the Lady Blue Hen Invitational on October 16-17 and UR's tourney-winning performance at the Navy Fall Invitational on October 2-3.
The Spiders took advantage of the par 5s throughout the event at Kingsmill. Richmond's combined score of 7-under par on the par 5s was 13 strokes better than any other team in the field.
A pair of Spiders competed in the event as individuals, with freshman Christine Mandile tying for 65th at 254 (+38) and sophomore Claire Yioulos tying for 74th at 266 (+50).
Richmond will return to action on April 4-5 at the ECU Easter Invitational at Ironwood Golf & Country Club in Greenville, N.C.
