DURHAM, N.C. – The 19th-ranked University of Richmond men's lacrosse team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end Saturday on the road against No. 10 Duke, 14-8 at Koskinen Stadium. The Spiders return to action next weekend hosting No. 3 Georgetown at Robins Stadium. A ticket purchase is required for admission to the Georgetown game.
Graduate midfielder Luke Frankeny (Wilmington, N.C.) led the way tying his season-high with four goals while also adding an assist. Frankeny has now scored 12 goals in his first five career games as a Spider.
Graduate attack Ryan Lanchbury (Burlington, Ontario) tallied a goal and two assists, moving into the top spot in Richmond history with career assists at 104. He surpassed former Spider Teddy Hatfield (103) for the record and now is the all-time leader in program history in goals, assists and points.
The two teams traded goals in the early going with freshman Gavin Houghtaling (East Syracuse, N.Y.) notching his second goal of the season. Duke responded with six-straight goals, taking a 7-1 lead before the Spiders responded with a pair of their own. Redshirt freshman Cooper Dainton (Hingham, Mass.) found the back of the net for his fourth of the season while Frankeny added his ninth tally of the season.
The Spiders were able to pull within five at 10-5 in the third quarter when freshman faceoff Jared Chenoy (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) tallied his second career goal straight off the faceoff. Chenoy finished the game 8-of-20 at the faceoff dot, picking up six ground balls as the Spiders were 12-of-24 total on faceoffs.
Duke (6-2) wouldn't allow the Spiders to get any closer, responding to Spider pushes all day long. Redshirt sophomore goalie Devin Craven (McLean, Va.) played the first half and allowed eight goals while making 10 saves. Redshirt freshman Zach Vigue (Apex, N.C.) played in the second half and allowed six goals while making six saves.
