03/08/2022 | Men's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. -- Richmond's Tyler Burton and Jacob Gilyard have been named to the Atlantic 10's All-Conference Teams, the league announced Tuesday. Burton, a junior, was selected to the All-Atlantic 10 Second Team after leading the Spiders with 16.5 points and 7.4 rebounds per game during the regular season. Gilyard, a graduate student, earned All-Atlantic 10 Third Team honors after leading the conference in steals, minutes, and assist-to-turnover ratio. Gilyard was also named to the A-10 All-Defense Team for a fourth straight year.Â
This is the first All-Conference selection of Burton's career after being named the Atlantic 10's Most Improved Player last season. During the regular season, Burton was the only player in the Atlantic 10 to rank in the top seven in the league in scoring (fifth at 16.5 points per game) and rebounding (seventh at 7.4 rebounds per game). He ranks second in the A-10 with eight double-doubles and leads the conference in both free throws and free-throw attempts. Burton earned A-10 Player of the Week honors twice this season, on December 20 and February 7. Burton is the 14th different player to earn All-Atlantic 10 honors in coach Chris Mooney's 17 seasons at Richmond.Â
2021-22 is the fourth straight season Gilyard has been named to an Atlantic 10 All-Conference Team. He is one of just eight four-time All-Conference honorees in Atlantic 10 history, a group that also includes teammate Grant Golden. Gilyard ranks second in Division I in both steals per game (3.0) and minutes per game (38:22) and is fourth in the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio, at 3.50. He averaged 12.4 points, 5.7 assists, and 3.5 rebounds per game during the regular season.Â
Gilyard, the NCAA Division I career steals leader, also was named to the A-10's All-Defense Team for a fourth straight season. Gilyard is one of 10 semifinalists for the Naismith National Defensive Player of the Year and is also one of 10 men's finalists for the Senior CLASS Award, which recognizes a senior or grad student for excellence in competition, the classroom, the community, and in one's character.
2021-22 is the fourth straight season Richmond has placed multiple players on the Atlantic 10 All-Conference Teams, tied for the longest active streak in the league with Dayton and Saint Louis.Â
Burton, Gilyard, and the Spiders will open play at the 2022 Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Championship in Washington, D.C. on Thursday at 8:30 PM against either Duquesne or Rhode Island. The game will be televised on USA Network and can be heard on ESPN Richmond radio. Tickets are available at spides.us/A10MBBChamp.
