Charlottesville, Va.— The University of Richmond women's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season Wednesday, falling to Virginia on the road, 20-10.
The #16/22 Spiders trailed by just one at the end of the first quarter, but the high-powered offense of #14/15 Virginia proved to be too much.
The Cavaliers (4-4) held the upper hand in shots (40-31), shots on goal (31-21) and most notably, draw controls (23-11). While the Spiders (5-1) trailed in the possession game, it edged UVA in ground balls (14-13) while both teams' goalkeepers notched 11 saves.
Marina Miller tied her career-high for goals in a game with four, freshman Colleen Quinn recorded her third hat trick in six games as a Spider, Lindsey Frank added two more and Nicole Concannon chipped in one.
Arden Tierney continued her hot streak dishing assists, adding three, while Quinn chipped in two and Hannah Custer and Frank had one each.
The Spiders hung tough with the Cavaliers, but streaky scoring would lift the home team. Virginia put together four- and three-goal runs in the second, and a six-goal streak to close the game between the late third quarter and the midway point of the fourth.
The Spiders are back on the road next week when it faces James Madison on Wednesday, March 16. Opening draw against the Dukes set for 5 p.m.
