Weirather Tosses Complete Game Shutout Against VCU
04/15/2022 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. – University of Richmond starter Brock Weirather (Polk City, Fla.) tossed a complete game shutout Friday to open the Atlantic 10 series against VCU with a 7-0 victory at Pitt Field.
Richmond moves to 16-14 on the season and 2-5 in league action while VCU drops to 17-15 on the year, and 3-4 in conference play. Game two of the rivalry conference series is set for a 1 p.m. first pitch Saturday at Pitt Field.
Weirather notched a season-high eight strikeouts while scattering seven hits over nine innings, his longest outing of the year. He gave up only one extra base hit, a double in the fourth and worked out of a two-on, no out situation in the second by getting two-straight strikeouts and a ground out to end it. Weirather had five 1-2-3 innings in his outing, including striking out the side in the eighth.
"Brock pitched outstanding today," head coach Tracy Woodson said. "All three pitches were working for him. The biggest moment in the game was in the second when he stranded two runners. That set the tone for the game and the team."
Richmond's offense woke up in the sixth, as Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) laced a one-out single through the right side. Two pitches later, Mathes scored from first on Dominic Toso's (Philadelphia, Pa.) double to left center to break up the scoreless tie. On a 1-0 pitch, Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.) homered to right field, quickly putting the Spiders up 3-0. With two runners going and two out, Will Gersky (Woodbury, Conn.) skyed a fly ball that VCU couldn't handle on a sunny day, Richmond pushed their lead to 5-0.
Seeing the ball well against VCU relievers, Toso picked up his sixth home run of the season in the bottom of the seventh with a solo shot to left field.
Jared Sprague-Lott (Philadelphia, Pa.) launched a solo home run to center field in the eighth for his third home run of the year.
