Spiders add Jason Roche, Southern Conference Rookie of the Year

Richmond, VA— Jason Roche, who was Southern Conference Rookie of the Year following his freshman campaign at Citadel last season, will transfer to Richmond and play for the Spiders in 2022-23.
Roche, a 6-foot-5, 180-pound forward, averaged 13.2 points and 4.0 rebounds a game with the Citadel. Roche made 110 total three-pointers last season, which ranked first among all freshmen and ninth among all players in Division I, and 3.55 three-pointers per game, the seventh most in Division I. Roche shot 39.7 percent from three-point range, third in the Southern Conference and 39th in Division I, and averaged 36:2 minutes per game, most in the league.
In his first collegiate game, Roche notched 27 points with eight three-pointers to lead Citadel to an upset over ACC foe Pittsburgh on November 9. He scored a career-high 29 points against Samford on February 5, tacking on a career-high nine three-pointers. In his one season with the Citadel, he played in 31 games with 30 starts.
A native of Berkeley, Calif., Roche finished his prep career playing under coach Rob Toste at Pomfret School in Pomfret, Conn. Prior to Pomfret, he attended St. Mary's College High School in Albany, Calif., where he averaged 23.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists, leading the Panthers to the California state co-championship as a senior. He earned first-team all-league honors as a junior and senior and was named Team MVP his final two seasons.
Roche is the third transfer to join the Spiders this offseason, joining Isaiah Bigelow from Wofford and Neal Quinn from Lafayette. Since entering the transfer portal, Roche also received offers from Missouri, Pittsburgh, Kansas State, St. Bonaventure, and San Diego.
