Vinny Capra Called Up by Toronto Blue Jays

RICHMOND, Va.- University of Richmond Spider Baseball alum Vinny Capra (Melbourne, Fla.) was called up by the Toronto Blue Jays Friday from their Triple-A affiliate Buffalo Bison. Capra is the first Spider called up to the Majors since Joe Mahoney in 2012 by the Baltimore Orioles and the first to play in the majors since Tim Stauffer in 2015. Capra joins the Blue Jays in Toronto, activated prior to the start of a home series against the Houston Astros.

Capra, a 2018 draft pick in the 20th round by the Blue Jays, opened the 2022 season with Buffalo. In 18 games, Capra hit .304 with 21 hits, including three doubles and three home runs, and 10 RBI at third base.

Capra quickly moved through the Toronto system since being drafted in 2018. In his first season in2018, he saw action in both Single-A Vancouver Canadians (short season) and Lansing Lugnuts (full season) before spending the whole 2019 season with Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Capra also spent most of the 2021 season playing the hot corner for the Fisher Cats before getting to Triple-A Buffalo at the end of the season.

At Richmond, Capra anchored the left side of the infield at short for two seasons and collected Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team honors in both 2017 and 2018. In his senior 2018 season, Capra led the Spiders in hits (66), average (.327), runs (40), home runs (5), and RBI (41). Capra also paced the Richmond offense in 2017 in average (.355), hits (75), and runs (47) and second with four home runs.
