Spiders Drop Series Opener to Dayton

DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Richmond baseball team fell to the University of Dayton, 7-2, in the first game of the Atlantic 10 Conference series Friday night at Day Air Ballpark, home of the Dayton Dragons.
The Spiders fall to 23-22 on the year and 8-11 in A-10 action while the Flyers improve to 21-24 on the year and 8-10 in league play.
Game two of the series moves to Woerner Field at AES Ohio Stadium with first pitch set for 1 p.m. on ESPN-plus.
The Spiders were down quickly as the Flyers tagged Richmond starter Brock Weirather (Polk City, Fla.) with six runs, five earned, on nine hits and one walk in six innings of action. He also collected four strikeouts.
Wintson Allen (Morristown, N.J.) allowed one run on one hit with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work. Antonio Balducci (Mechanicsville, Va.) gave up a walk and Neff erased the runner throwing him out at second to end the eighth.
Richmond broke up the no-hitter and the shutout in the seventh. Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) started the inning with a base hit to second and was followed by Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) draw in a walk. With two outs, Jake Elbeery (North Andover, Mass.) scored Mathes with a base hit left. Jason Neff (West Palm Beach, Fla.) picked up Toso with a hit to center field.
The Spiders had runners in scoring position in the eighth and ninth, but were stranded.
