Spiders Season Ends in Atlantic 10 Tournament Final

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The 2022 season came to an end for the University of Richmond baseball team Saturday, after falling to VCU 10-7 in the Atlantic 10 Championship game at Wilson Field on the campus of Davidson College. The Spiders four-game winning streak was snapped by the squad that sent the Spiders to the consolation bracket.
Richmond wraps up the season with a 30-26 record, marking the second time the Spiders tallied a 30-win season during Head Coach Tracy Woodson nine seasons at the helm of the program. The 2018 squad finished with a 32-24 record.
VCU took a quick 2-0 lead in the first. Richmond answered with three runs in the bottom of the second, getting the inning started with three-consecutive base hits to load the bases. Zach Lass (Mechanicsville, Va.) tallied a sacrifice fly to score Jason Neff (West Palm Beach, Fla.) for Richmond's first run of the game. D.J. Pacheco (Danvers, Mass.) followed with a double to plate Jake Elbeery (North Andover, Mass.). The Spiders third run of the inning came on Christian Beal's (Flossmoor, Ill.) sacrifice fly to take the lead.
VCU plated four more runs in the third on Richmond starter Brock Weirather (Polk City, Fla.) in his second start of the tournament. Over 2.1 innings, Weirather allowed six earned runs on seven hits and two walks with two strikeouts.
Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.), who went 4-for-5 on the day, led off the bottom of the third with a double before scoring on Elbeery's single through the right side to stay within two runs, 6-4. Toso then tallied a two-RBI base hit to tie the game at 6-all in the fourth.
Antonio Balducci (Mechanicsville, Va.) tossed two scoreless frames in the fourth and fifth before getting tagged with two runs on two hits, a walk and hit batter in the sixth. He also collected two strikeouts on 2.2 innings of work.
VCU picked up a third run in the sixth for a 9-6 lead, before adding a single run in the ninth.
Eli Kimbell (New York, N.Y.) allowed one run while hitting two batters and recording one out. Esteban Rodriguez (Doral, Fla.) threw the final 3.2 innings of the game allowing one run on four hits and three walks with two strike outs.
Post game, four Spiders were named to the A-10 All-Tournament Team. Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.), Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.), Jason Neff (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) were selected to the All-Tournament team by the media and Sports Information Directors.
