Spider Baseball Alum Wyatt Ulrich Signs with Padres

RICHMOND, Va. – University of Richmond baseball alum Wyatt Ulrich, '21, (Indus, Minn.) has signed a free agent minor league contract with the San Diego Padres, the organization announced late Friday. He will report to the Padres Double A affiliate San Antonio Missions, in the Texas League.
Ulrich took advantage of his one season with the Spiders in 2021 after arriving as a highly decorated graduate transfer from NCAA Division III St. John's (Minn.). He made 24 starts for Richmond, all from the lead-off spot in the order, finishing the season with a .344 average in 94 at bats, with six doubles and a triple. He scored 21 runs and drove in 15, while drawing 13 walks and only striking out five times. He also paced the Spiders on the base paths with six stolen bases in seven attempts.
Ulrich spent the last two seasons with the Sioux Falls Canaries in the American Association of Professional Baseball. He was named to the American Association All-Star Game and drew a vital walk in the ninth that led to a three-run home run to help the West defeat the East, 7-6. This season, Ulrich batted .353 with 79 hits, 14 doubles, three triples and three home runs in 224 at bats over 52 games. He also collected 23 RBI, scored 47 runs, stole 10 bases and drew 17 walks.
In his 2021 American Association Rookie of the Year campaign with the Canaries, Ulrich put together a .327 average with 119 hits, including with 16 doubles, six triples, and one home run, in 364 at bats in 88 games. He also drew 42 walks, stole 20 bases, while driving in 37 and scoring 69 times. He also set the modern Canaries records with a 51-game on-base streak and a 29-game hit streak.
