Spiders End in 1-1 Tie at Charlotte
08/21/2022 | Women's Soccer
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Spiders struck first Sunday evening, but ended their match at Charlotte in a 1-1 tie after 90 minutes of play. The Spiders and 49ers both sit at 0-1-1 after Sunday night's contest.
"I'm really pleased with how we responded from an average performance Thursday night. I thought we did a really nice job disrupting the way Charlotte wanted to play. We created some unbelievable chances, but unfortunately we couldn't capitalize," said head coach Marty Beall. "[Taylor] Montague had a fantastic game today too. Charlotte is a really good and well-coached team, so for us to have this type of performance against this caliber of team shows the growth of this team in just three weeks."
Molly Wierman netted Richmond's first goal of the season in the 22nd minute when she swiped the ball from the Charlotte goalkeeper and sent a hard strike into the net from eight yards out. The Spiders went into halftime leading 1-0 and holding the advantage in shots, 7-4 and corners, 3-2.
Charlotte retaliated in the 73rd minute with a long ball from Kelly Hastings that was finished by Tash Hudson in the top right corner of the goal.
Hannah Antonick led the Spiders in shots with five, and goalkeeper Taylor Montague collected four saves on the night.
Up next, the Spiders host Delaware in their home opener Sunday, Aug. 28. It is Richmond's Mental Health Awareness game, and kick off is set for 1 p.m. from President's Field.
