Four Score in Spider Hockey Victory Over Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. – The University of Richmond field hockey team came from behind early in the second quarter and never stepped off the gas, collecting a 4-2 victory over Longwood Sunday.
Richmond (1-1) is back in action Friday against William & Mary. The contest is set for a 6 p.m. start in Williamsburg on FloSports.
"Today's game was a big step for the team," head coach Jamie Montgomery said. "They worked hard together on both sides of the ball and showed real grit battling back for the win!"
After a scoreless first quarter, Longwood (1-1) got on the scoreboard first, with a goal at the 21:27 mark off a corner play.
Senior Regan McCrossan (Wexhaw, N.C.) tied the game a little over a minute later when she tipped in a pass from sophomore Stevie Drum (Virginia Beach, Va.) at 22:38 in the second quarter.
Senior Evie Hanson (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored her first goal of the season at the 27:30 mark to give the Spiders a 2-1 lead heading into halftime. Hanson's goal went high past the Longwood goalie after getting a pass from freshman Madelyn Curtis (Richmond, Va.).
Two-and-a-half minutes into the second half, senior Lindsey Frank (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) tallied her first goal of the season with an unassisted score from the far-right side of the circle.
Longwood got within one, at 3-2, a few minutes later at the 34:18 mark.
Freshman Lainey Nichols (Midlothian, Va.) tallied her first collegiate goal late, taking advantage of a scramble in front of the goal to push a shot past the Longwood goalie at the 55:47 mark in the game.
Senior goalie Erika Latta (Midlothian, Va.) tallied six saves in the victory.
Richmond outshot Longwood 15-11, with an 11-8 shots-on-goal advantage. The Spiders also collected more corners than the Lancers, 5-3.
