RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond field hockey team scored first, but fell late in a defensive battle to No. 14 Old Dominion Sunday at Crenshaw Field.
Richmond (3-2) heads on the road to take on No. 18 Wake Forest Friday (Sept. 16) at 4 p.m. in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Spiders open Atlantic 10 play hosting Davidson Sunday (Sept. 18) at Crenshaw Field for an 11 a.m. contest on ESPN+.
After a tremendous defensive stand on an ODU corner in the first, Richmond jumped on the opportunity. Earning a corner at the 8:29 mark in the first quarter, Lindsey Frank (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) fired home her team-leading third goal of the season to give Richmond the early lead. Freshman Madelyn Curtis (Richmond, Va.) inserted the ball to senior Tess Keppel (Baltimore, Md.) for the stick stop and set up for Frank's shot.
ODU tied the game with a penalty stroke at the 19:35 mark in the second quarter.
The Monarchs tallied the eventual game-winner 25 seconds before the end of the third quarter, putting in a shot off a scramble for the ball in front of the goal.
The visitors thwarted Richmond's attempts in the fourth quarter to possess the ball in UR's attacking third to collect the victory. ODU held a 9-6 shot advantage as well as a 7-3 advantage in penalty corners.
UR goalkeeper Erika Latta (Midlothian, Va.) picked up a season-high six saves.
