Spider Hockey Falls in Nail-biter at No. 17 Wake Forest, 4-3

Richmond, now 3-3 on the season, returns to campus to open Atlantic 10 Conference play Sunday, hosting Davidson for an 11 a.m. contest on ESPN-Plus at Crenshaw Field.
"I am so proud of the way we battled as a team throughout the game," head coach Jamie Montgomery said. "We showed real bravery on defense and tenacity on offense."
Wake Forest got on the board first, finding the back of the goal with 32 seconds left in the first quarter.
Senior midfielder Lindsey Frank (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) evened the contest three minutes later in the second quarter. Frank juked her defender and sent the shot on a tight angle past the Wake Forest goalie for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
The Spiders headed into the half with a 3-2 advantage in corners, all awarded in the first quarter, but the teams were knotted at three shots on goal and two saves.
Wake Forest pushed their lead out to 3-1 in the third quarter, capitalizing off of seven penalty corners in the quarter.
44 seconds in to the fourth quarter, Frank drew the Wake Forest defense' attention and zipped a pass to junior Madi Hyatt (Fredericksburg, Va.) for the score to put the Spiders within a goal, 3-2.
On the Spiders first corner of the fourth quarter, after junior Alexandria Lavelle (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) flicked in a pass from freshman Jess McMeeking (Canterbury, England) to tie the game at 3-all in the 49th minute.
In the 53rd minute, after a long review by the officials, Wake Forest scored the game winner off of a penalty stroke.
Richmond picked up two late penalty corners, but were unable to convert. Senior goalkeeper Erika Latta (Midlothian, Va.) posted a season-high seven saves. Senior defender Tess Keppel (Baltimore, Md.) also collected a career-high two defensive saves.
Wake Forest finished the game with a 28-11 shot advantage, as well as 11-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Demon Deacons had a 12-6 upper hand in penalty corners.
