Shitikova, Bakhaya Win Singles Bracket at Elon Fall Invite

ELON, N.C. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team opened its fall season this past weekend at the Elon Fall Invitational in Elon, N.C.
Junior Polina Shitikova made her first appearance since suffering an injury after the second match of the Spring 2022 season and won her singles bracket while freshman Lara Bakhaya also won her singles bracket in her Spider debut.
Shitikova went all three sets in all three matches to win her bracket, beginning with a 7-6, 0-6, 6-4 win over James Madison's Alexandra Prudente before defeating NC A&T's Lana Caculovic 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 in the semifinals. She then defeated Emory's Alyssa Margolin 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in the finals.
Bakhaya dominated her way through her bracket, first defeating UNC Asheville's Beatrice Faureng 6-1, 6-1. She then battled for a 6-2, 7-6 (10) win over Elon's Shauna Galvin in the semifinals before defeating Emory's Iris Berman 6-3, 6-3 in the finals.
As a team on Friday, the Spiders went 1-5 in doubles and 5-2 in singles. They went 3-3 in doubles and 5-2 in singles Saturday and 4-1 in singles Sunday.
Up next, the Spiders head to Philly for the Cissie Leary Invitational hosted by Penn Sept. 23-Sept. 25.
