Spiders Drop Physical Battle at Fordham Wednesday Night
01/25/2023 | Women's Basketball
NEW YORK – With a combined 35 turnovers from both teams, the University of Richmond Women's Basketball team dropped a tough, physical battle at Fordham, 68-59 Wednesday night in the Big Apple. With the loss, the Spiders fell to 12-7 on the season and 2-4 in conference play while Fordham improved to 14-7 overall and 6-2 in the A-10.
"We were never in control, but I thought we were able to manage all the aspects of the game pretty well," said Head Coach Aaron Roussell. "We got killed on the boards in the third quarter by Dapaa. She was outstanding. Every time we got a stop, she went up and got an offensive rebound. In the fourth quarter, we just had a ton of turnovers and we struggled against the press, which turned into easy baskets for them."
The Spiders were led by sophomore Katie Hill, who recorded a double-double on the night with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Three other Spiders recorded 10 points, including junior Grace Townsend, junior Addie Budnik and freshman Maggie Doogan, who was just shy of a double-double with nine rebounds.
As a team, the spiders shot 21 of 52 (40.4%) from the field, 6 of 21 (28.6%) from deep and 11 of 15 (73.3%) from the free throw line in addition to 33 rebounds, four blocks, six thefts and 13 points off 11 Ram turnovers.
After a quick 4-0 start by the Rams, a trey from Budnik allowed the Spiders to slash the lead to one, 4-3. Following the play, Hill recorded a layup to give UR its first lead of the game, 5-4, but FOR responded with a trey of its own to regain the lead, 7-5.
The lead change sparked a deep 7-0 run from the Spiders courtesy of free throws from Grace Townsend to take the lead at 12-7 with 4:05 left in the quarter. UR was able to hold onto the lead and end the first quarter with a seven-point lead, 20-13.
Through the first 10 minutes, the Spiders were paced by Budnik, who put up six points in addition to a block while junior Siobhan Ryan and Hill each chipped in five points on offense. The Spiders shot 7 of 14 (50%) from the field, 3 of 5 (60%) from deep and 3 of 4 (75%) from the free throw line in addition to six rebounds, three assists, two thefts and a block.
Freshman Rachel Ullstrom continued the fiery offense in the second quarter, getting the Spiders on the board first for a 22-13 lead. Later, the Rams began to scratch back at the lead to 28-21 with a few short-lived runs, but the Spiders continued to hold onto their lead at the half, 29-24.
At the Half, Budnik and Ryan continued to propel the Spider offense, each recording seven points each. Hill chipped in five points through the first 20 minutes of action while Doogan recorded seven rebounds along with two points. As a team, UR shot 11 of 24 (45.8%) from the field, 3 of 8 (37.5%) from deep and 4 of 6 (66.7%) from the free throw line. The Spiders also had 17 rebounds, including three offensive and eight points off eight Ram turnovers.
The Rams opened the third quarter with a pair of free throws to cut the UR lead to three, 29-26, but a driving layup later in the quarter from sophomore Sydney Boone sparked a 9-0 run from the Spiders to push the lead to 43-31 with 2:39 left. The Rams wouldn't be silenced, however, as three free throws from FOR ended the third quarter with UR in the lead, 45-38.
Budnik opened the final quarter with a layup to give UR a 47-40 lead, but Spider errors allowed the Rams to take the lead, 48-47 with 7:17 left. A trey late into the quarter from Doogan allowed UR to scratch back to come within one, 57-56, but foul trouble for the Spiders allowed Fordham to sneak away with the win, 68-59.
The Spiders return home to the Robins Center on Jan. 29, playing host to Saint Joseph's for the Play4Kay/National Girls and Women In Sports Day Celebration Presented by CarMax at 4 p.m. and will open February's slate of games at UMass on Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. in Amherst, Mass.
