Spiders Ground Hawks in Overtime Win Sunday Evening

RICHMOND, Va. – Behind a career-high 28 points from freshman standout Maggie Doogan, the University of Richmond Women's Basketball team defeated the Saint Joseph's Hawks Sunday evening, 94-90 for the Play4Kay / National Girls and Women In Sports Day Celebration Presented by CarMax inside the Robins Center. The Spiders bounced back following a midweek loss to Fordham on Wednesday and improved to 13-7 on the year and 3-4 in A-10 play while the Hawks fell to 15-6 overall and 5-4 in the A-10.
"I'm really proud of our effort, and also proud of how our players battled through a lot of foul trouble," said Head Coach Aaron Roussell. "We were short on numbers today, but hopefully that gets improved within the next 72 hours. A lot of players stepped up on our team today. Torin Rogers coming in and playing 20 minutes was huge and Rachel had a lot of great looks in overtime."
The Spiders were led by Doogan, who had another career night and recorded her fourth-straight game in double figures. The freshman also recorded two thefts, six rebounds and a career-high five assists through a career-high 37 minutes. Juniors Siobhan Ryan and Grace Townsend each chipped in 14 points in the contest while Townsend also put up 10 boards for a double-double. Junior Addie Budnik and sophomore Sydney Boone each had 11 points, and sophomore Katie Hill was the final Spider in double figures with 10 points.
As a team, the Spiders shot 28 of 52 (53.8%) from the field, 14 of 24 (58.3%) from deep and 24 of 33 (72.7%) from the line in addition to 29 rebounds, including four offensive, 21 assists, three blocks, five thefts and 17 points off 15 Hawk turnovers.
UR got off to a 5-0 run sparked by Hill, before the Hawks were able to scratch back at the lead to cut the deficit to 5-3 with 7:10 left in the quarter. Two minutes later, SJU tied the game at five, and then again at nine with 4:03 left. SJU took a small lead, 13-10, at the end of the quarter, but a free throw from Boone tied the game at 13. The Hawks got one final layup off as time expired to take a 15-13 point lead going into the second quarter.
Through the first ten minutes, the Spiders were paced by Townsend, who put up six points, going a perfect 2 of 2 from the three-point line. Three other Spiders chipped in two points while Doogan dropped two dimes and collected three rebounds.
The Spiders shot 4 of 13 (30.77%) from the field, 2 of 7 (28.57%) from deep and 3 of 4 (75%) from the free throw line in the first quarter as the team also had 16 rebounds, eight assists, two thefts, two blocks and 15 points off 12 Hawk turnovers.
Boone opened the second quarter with back-to-back treys to give UR the lead, 19-15. Boone finished the game shooting 3 of 4 from beyond the arc. After SJU fought back and tied the game and took the lead at 23-22, Doogan recorded a trey to give the Spiders the lead, 25-23. After exchanging points throughout the quarter, Doogan hit another try as time expired to send the Spiders into the locker room ahead 36-34.
Boone led the offense in the first half, putting up 11 points off the bench in addition to two rebounds while Doogan also scored in double figures through the first half, chipping in 10 points as well as four rebounds and three dimes. As a team, the Spiders shot 6 of 11 (54.55%) from the field, 6 of 8 (75%) from deep and 5 of 8 (62.5%) from the line in the second quarter.
Out of the locker room, Hill pushed the Spider lead to 38-34 from a layup courtesy of Boone. Later, a 9-0 run from UR gave the Spiders a 10-point lead, 52-42 with 4:48 left in the quarter. The Hawks slowly chipped away at the deficit, but UR was able to hold on and go into the fourth quarter leading 59-53.
After a trey from Ryan gave the Spiders a 68-60 lead in the fourth quarter with 5:21 left, the Hawks went on a deep run to cut the Spider lead to 71-70. With 56 seconds left, the Hawks recorded back-to-back layups to tie the game at 76 to force UR into its second OT game of the season.
In overtime, the Spiders took a two-point lead, 80-78 before a layup from freshman Rachel Ullstrom tied the game at 80. After the Hawks went into foul trouble, sharp free throw shooting from Townsend and Doogan allowed the Spiders to take the overtime win, 94-90.
The Spiders have a full slate of road games this week, taking on UMass at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Amherst, Mass., before traveling to Dayton on Feb. 4 for a noon tipoff.
