Lights-Out Shooting Lifts Women’s Basketball over Delaware State in 2023-24 Home Opener

RICHMOND, Va. – Behind a 53.8% three-point percentage and a 60.6% field-goal percentage, the University of Richmond Women's Basketball team opened the 2023-24 home slate and notched its first win of the season on Sunday, 105-44, over Delaware State inside the Robins Center. With the win, the Spiders improved to 1-1 overall while the Hornets fell to 0-3.

How it Happened
After a technical foul pregame on Richmond and a quick jumper from the opposition to start the game, Katie Hill recorded a wide-open trey to tie the game at three. The Spiders held the Hornets to only seven points in the first quarter as a jumper from Maggie Doogan with 4:54 left sparked an 18-0 run, allowing the Spiders to amass a 28-7 lead through the first 10 minutes.
In the second quarter, the Hornets ended the scoring drought with another quick jumper, but a 6-0 run from the Spiders sparked by Siobhan Ryan would help Richmond preserve a 20-point lead, 32-12 with 6:44 left in the half. Richmond would then end the quarter with a 9-2 run to head into the locker room with a 57-18 lead.
Richmond continued its scoring campaign in the third quarter as a 7-0 run sparked from a Maggie Doogan trey would lift the Spiders to 64-23. Delaware State would tack on only six more points in the third quarter as Richmond headed into the final 10 minutes up 85-29.
Grace Townsend opened the third quarter with a three-pointer assisted by freshman Ally Sweeney before the Hornets went on a 6-0 run to cut the Spider lead to 88-35. Richmond eclipsed the 100-point mark from a jumper courtesy of freshman Melissa Mwanza with 2:11 remaining in the game. Delaware state would only get a pair of free throws off as the Spiders ended the game with a 6-0 run courtesy of freshman Courtney Swider and Kylee Lewandowski for the 105-44 win.
