Spider Baseball Falls at William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The University of Richmond Baseball team dropped their fourth straight game, 8-2 to William & Mary Tuesday afternoon.
The Spiders (0-4) welcome the Yale Bulldogs to Pitt Field starting Friday for a three-game series, all on ESPN+. First pitch for Friday's contest is set for 1:30 p.m.
Richmond jumped out on William & Mary early, scoring two runs off a Tribe infielder error. Christian Beal and Alden Mathes both reached after getting hit by a ball. Jared Sprague-Lott reached on the error as Beal and Mathes flew around the base paths to score.
The Tribe answered with six runs on three hits and two errors in the bottom of the second, all off UR starter Vincent Corso (0-1). Esteban Rodriguez took over on the mound one out in the second, working around a walk with two ground outs. Rodriguez threw 4.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits, one hit batter and six strikeouts.
Richmond had two runners on in the third, fourth, sixth and seventh, but couldn't come up with a big hit to score. Jake Elbeery paced the Spiders with three hits, while Jason Neff chipped in two. Mathes, Johnny Hipsman, DJ Pacheco and Mikey Kluska all picked up base hits for the Spiders in the contest.
Chase Topolski made his collegiate debut on the mound in the seventh. After allowing a base hit to start the frame, Topolski struck out two while Neff threw out a runner at second. Alden Mathes came in from centerfield to pitch the eighth. Mathes allowed one run on two hits and struck out two in his first outing on the hill in 2023.
